The career path for teachers has traditionally been narrowly circumscribed. They could remain in the classroom for life, as many do. For those who want a break from the classroom routine, there have historically been few options: become a principal or superintendent, or morph into a policymaker or researcher. More likely, teachers who wanted to get away from the classroom would leave education altogether.

That’s not the case anymore.
